Bulgaria on Air: TI-Bulgaria: Bulgaria is the most corrupted country in the EU
For the seventh consecutive year, Bulgaria is the most corrupted country in the European Union. This is clear from the published Corruption Perception index of Transparency International.
The International Organization Transparency International measures the level of corruption in 180 countries. The index is a scale from 0 to 100. The fewer points one country has, the more corrupt it is.
Bulgaria is on last place in the European Union for consecutive year. Our country has 43 points. Closest to our Index are Hungary and Romania, which have received serious criticism over the past year regarding the fight against corruption and the rule of law.
Traditionally, the least corrupted counties in Europe are the Scandinavian countries – Denmark, Finland and Sweden.
Globally, our country climbs from 77th to 74th place of 180 countries in the whole ranking. Bulgaria show little improvement in comparison with 2018 but the reason for that is the poorest performance of other countries.
Somalia is the most corrupted country in the world, followed by Sudan and Syria.
Bulgaria owes its poor results due to freedom of the media, confidence in the election process, appointments to public institutions and the rule of law.
