The election of the Head of the State Agency for National Security done by the 42 National Assembly of Republic of Bulgaria on the 14th of June 2013 is an outrageous example of the failure to meet transparency and integrity standards in Bulgarian political life. The election process that took place is undermining the very fundamental principles of democracy and public interest. The National Assembly failed to offer the place for a competitive procedure with high standards of publicity and transparency of candidates and their concepts for the further role of the sole anti-corruption agency in the country.
Transparency International – Bulgaria urges the MPs to once again reflect the fact that the effective functioning of state authorities is based not only on written rules and procedures, but should be also embedded in ethical and integrity standards.
