Bulgaria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) list of jurisdictions under increased monitoring is a positive signal for international confidence in the country and its financial system. The decision could facilitate cross-border payments, reduce additional scrutiny by foreign financial institutions, and improve conditions for businesses and investors.
However, removal from the list does not mean that systemic weaknesses have been fully addressed.
Sustained progress requires effective implementation of measures, tangible results from investigations, and stronger action against financial flows linked to corruption and organised crime.
Bulgaria’s challenge now is to translate the progress achieved into lasting improvements in institutional practice. International credibility is restored not merely by fulfilling formal commitments, but through consistent action, accountability, and demonstrable results.
