In the backdrop of yet another blocking of the mechanism for investigating the Prosecutor General, a key component of the judicial reform, as well as Bulgaria’s commitment to the Recovery and Resilience plan, the new Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index ranked Bulgaria 72nd- second-to-to last in the EU. Bulgaria is only ahead of Hungary.
Kalin Slavov, the Executive Director of Transparency International Bulgaria stated that Hungary is not an adequate example to compare Bulgaria to because Hungary is currently the black sheep of the European Union and is experiencing problems with democracy and the judicial system so much so that funds for Hungary were made conditional on the basis of reform. There is also a very serious wavering against the civil sector in Hungary, he added.
