On January 23, 2022 the Bulgarian Parliament adopted on second reading of the law for the protection of Whistleblowers, published in Official Journal on February 3, 2023.
The purpose of the law is to enhance the protection of persons in the public and private sectors who want to report or publicly report information about breaches related to Bulgarian or European legislation, which become known to them in connection with their work or duties or in any other work context.
To implement the law in practice, it is necessary to prepare several by-laws in the next 6 months. These by-laws will be crucial for the implementation of European legislation under Directive (EU) 2019/1937 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2019 on the protection of persons who report breaches of Union law.
In relation to private sector employers who have between 50 and 249 workers or employees, the law will come into force on 17 December 2023.
