
As a result of a thorough and lengthy study, the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) approved special consultative status for Transparency International Bulgaria.
ECOSOC is one of the six main organs of the United Nations. It assists the General Assembly in promoting international economic and social cooperation and development.
The United Nations Economic and Social Council is a central forum for discussing and adopting international social and economic decisions, as well as for making policy recommendations addressed to member states and the UN system.
According to the UN Charter, ECOSOC is responsible for promoting a higher standard of living, full employment and economic and social progress, identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems, facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation, and promoting universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Since 1989, only four organizations in Bulgaria have received consultative status in ECOSOC, and Transparency International Bulgaria is the only one in our sector.
This gives the opportunity and creates the responsibility for Transparency International Bulgaria to participate in the official meetings and events of the Council, the functioning committees and other subsidiary bodies. Our team also has the task of sending written submissions before sessions, making oral statements, meeting with official delegations and other NGO representatives, participating in debates, interactive dialogues, panel discussions and informal meetings.
The cooperation of Transparency International Bulgaria with the UN Economic and Social Council with contribute to the development of policies and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. As an organization with special consultative status to ECOSOC, Transparency International Bulgaria will be able to fully participate in giving of opinions and making statements, especially when it comes to topics discussing civil rights, corruption and the rule of law.
In addition, Transparency International Bulgaria will provide expert analyses on anti-corruption issues and policies for good governance to the Council, will help monitor and implement international agreements, will work to raise public awareness of UN issues.
