Financing of political parties in Bulgaria (2002-2003)

INCREASING THE LEVEL OF TRANSPARENCY IN FINANCING OF POLITICAL PARTIES IN BULGARIA PILOT PROJECT

The project was implemented within 2002 -2003 and was financed by Westminster Foundation for Democracy. Political institutions and NGO’s, as well as employees of the Bulgarian National Audit Office and media representatives were associated with the project. They took part in a special training programme.

As a result of the project implementation, an independent expert evaluation of the level of transparency and accountability in financing of political parties in Bulgaria was carried out. Practical guidelines for its improvement were suggested, and the activity related to the institutionalisation of the Integrity Pact was concluded by the preparation of an Index for Transparent Financing of Political parties on the ground of the methodology of monitoring.

The Index was presented at an international seminar “Financing of Political parties and Pre-electoral campaigns in Southeastern Europe: Overcoming of Corruption Practices and Strengthening of Control mechanisms”.
